EDUCATION COMMISSION

The Catholic Church in Kerala has taken a missionary step to offer qualitative education to all by establishing as many institutions as possible  in almost all parts of the State.   Inorder to co-ordinate, support and promote such institutions and the activities of the educators, the Catholic Bishop’s Council of Kerala had Established a Commission.

Aims::

.To act as catalyst to the education mission of the Catholic Church in Kerala.

.To formulate action plans for the educational growth of young generation with special care for the poor and the needy of the society.

.To train and equip youngsters for leadership in the Church and in the society 

  • To train all teachers and non-teaching staff of all the institutions with Gospel values and encourage them to participate in the building up of the society.
  • To interact with government and other agencies who are engaged in the process of education to bring out a clarity of thought and vision in educating the future generation.
     
  • To co-ordinate, support and promote the functions and activities of the association of  Managers, Teachers, Non-teaching staff and Students  of the institutions.
  • To uphold and to stand for the Minority Rights of the educational institutions of the Catholic Church in Kerala, as enshrined in the Indian Constitution.

During the reporting year (2017-18) this Commission organized seminars, meetings and other various activities for the effective functioning of the Catholic Education Institution in Kerala. 

• Commission conducted meetings of the Consortium of Catholic Institutions for Higher Education (Aided Colleges) on 23/02/2018, 18/05/2018, 04/07/2018 to discuss various issues in the functioning of Catholic Colleges in Kerala. These meeting were presided over by Abp. Mar Andrews Thazhath, Chairman of the Commission. 
• The Commission organized a meeting of the Principals and Managers of Autonomous Colleges on 12/01/2018 at Archbishop’s house, Thrissur.
• Commission organized a meeting of Managers of Catholic Aided Schools on 25/01/2018. National Secretary for Education and Culture, CBCI, Fr. Joseph Manippadam and Regional Secretaries from Bhopal, Chattisgrah and Vijayawada attended the meeting along with managers from Kerala.
• Meetings were conducted for various sections of Managers during the reporting year – Unaided School Managers (30/06/2018 and 30/11/2017), Unrecognized School Managers (07/02/2018), Self financing College Managers (30/08/2018), Engineering College Managers (22/08/2018).
• Commission organized a protest meeting on 17th March 2018 at S.B. College campus, Changanassery, demanding immediate intervention of State Government in solving various problems confronted by Managers and teachers regarding approval of appointment of teachers approval of courses etc. Baselios Cardinal Clemis Catholicos, Abp. Mar Joseph Powathil, Abp. Mar Joseph Kallaranghat, Abp. Mar Andrews Thazhath etc. addressed the gathering which was attended by more than 4000 teachers gathered from all parts of Kerala.
• Commission organized Annual Examination and Scholarship Examination for Moral Science in the Schools and scholarships were distributed to the winners during the meeting conducted at P.O.C. on 13/04/2018
• Empowerment seminar for newly appointed Headmasters was conducted on 22nd & 23rd May 2018 at P.O.C., Palarivattom.
• Commission started a Desk for Minority issues to assist the Managers to solve various issues and help them to avail various minority funds and scholarships sponsored by Central and State Government. Mrs. Lida Jacob Rtd. IAS officer is associated with this Desk.
• KCBC Commission for Education is registered as a Charitable Trust on 16/02/2018 to make it more organized and systematic in its functioning.
• The commission opened a website www.kcbceducation.in to facilitate the communication with member institutions and the public.
• The commission takes active involvement in solving various problems arising in the administration of educational institutions. In this regards commission takes initiatives to conduct discussions with concerned ministers in the Government and in certain cases organizes legal procedures in the High Court and Supreme Court as and when it is necessary. At present several cases are pending in both courts. 
• The Vigilance Cell of the Commission constituted by teachers is watchful against the directions of the Educational Department and other agencies violating the rights of minorities. The commission successfully protested against decision of PSC to conduct examination on Sundays, conduct seminars and training program during of Christmas holidays and Sundays. 
• The commission is taking initiative to impart constitutional values to the students and necessary preparations are in progress.
• The commission organizes various activities of Catholic Teachers Guild, Kerala Catholic Students league (KCSL) in the schools. These two organizations play a vital role among the teachers and students.
• Commission took initiatives for the implementation and appraisal of All India Catholic Education Policy-2007 in the educational institutions in Kerala.
