Bishop Mar Paul Chittilapilly was born on Feb. 7, 1934 at Mattam in Thrissur. He joined St. Marys Minor Seminary Thrissur, in 1953. He was ordained a priest for the diocese of Thrissur on Oct. 18, 1961 in Rome by Mar Mathew Kavukatt, the then archbishop of Changanassery. He secured licentiate in Theology from Pontifical Urban University, Rome. He took doctorate in Canon Law in 1966 from the Lateran University, Rome. During this period he served as father prefect to the Malabar Community in Rome. He was professor of Theology and Canon Law at St. Thomas Apostolic Seminary, Kottayam. Later he was appointed as the chancellor of the Archeparchy of Thrissur. In 1987, he was appointed as the chaplain to Syro Malabar Catholics and General Director of Kerala Catholic Association (KCA) in Bombay. In 1988, he was nominated as the bishop of Kalyan and was ordained bishop on Aug. 24, 1988 by Antony Cardinal Padiyara. In 1996 he was appointed as the Bishop of Thamarassery diocese and took charge of his office on Feb. 13, 1997. He served the Church as the Chairman for Liturgy and Chairman for Kerala Catholic Bishops Council (KCBC) Commission for Family, Laity & Women. He retired on Jan. 15, 2010 .
